The aspect of Water is quite important because neglecting it could result in anything from poor digestion to even back pain! With that said lets talk about why water is so important. We can go without food for quite some time, even 40+ days! But water? 3-4 days is all you would last.

With food frequency is not what is so important, after all some people are quite happy with one meal per day. With water however it is best to be taking a drink regularly as waiting until you are super thirsty is too long. One way to help is buy a water bottle with the time of the day on the side. If it is full at noon you have a problem! The water level should be at the noon level. Or just put tape on the side and do this yourself no need to buy something new! Try setting phone timers. whatever you need.

Hydration is more than drinking, it is also what you consume that can dehydrate you. If you eat salty crackers, those will dehydrate you due to the salt concentration going up and the dry crackers needing to be rehydrated by the body. If you do not replenish the body with the water used for the crackers you are now somewhat dehyrated. Think of putting a sponge into a glass of water. It sucks up the water like the cracker and then removing the sponge is like… well.. going poop! If you do not replenish the water the cracker used, the body can take the water from your poop. Clever girl! But now you poop is a rock hard pellet! Have fun passing that. And you wonder why digestive aid type meds are the number 1 over the counter med. We should poop roughly as many meals as we have in a day. We should pee 6-10 times per 24 hour period (but getting up several times per night to pee shouldn’t happen, 0-1 times per night)

Eat water rich foods, or drink proper amounts of water. Here are three things you can do to master the aspect of water.

Step 1: check your colour

What colour is your urine?

Use this chart as a guide.

Step 2: Get Enough

drink around 2-3 litres per day. It is different for everyone, someone working outside in the heat may need way more water. Someone inside where they are sedentary eating watermelon and cucumber may not need to drink hardly any water. Use phone timers or a water bottle with the times of the day down the side to track this.

Step 3: Plan Ahead

Do not leave your place without a bottle of water. This does 2 things. prevents you from buying water in plastic, or even better prevents you from buying something like juice, pop, or coffee.

Step 4: Conserve Water

Here are some ways you can use less water:

  • Flush less frequently, pee is OK to leave! No need to flush nail clippings (just throw those in the trash bin)
  • Put a plastic bottle in your toilet tank

Put an inch or two of sand or pebbles in the bottom of a one litre bottle to weigh it down; Fill the rest with water. This will displace the water and less will get used by the toilet when flushing.

  • Shorter showers
  • Install water saving shower head
  • Turn off water while brushing your teeth
  • Full loads only for washing machine
  • Water grass during cool part of day
  • Put mulch around plants

These are just a few water saving ideas!
